New York Yankees beaten by Tampa Bay Rays 2-5 – MLB Update
New York Yankees were crushed by the Tampa Bay Rays 2-5 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida on Tuesday, September 4 in second game of their three match series.
Starting pitcher Freddy Garcia was hit hard in his five plus innings of start as he gave up five hits and five runs while striking-out five batters. Relief pitchers Cody Eppley and Joba Chamberlain combined to pitch two scoreless innings but the Rays were
too hot to handle on Tuesday as they held on to their three run lead comfortably.
Robinson Cano homered to left in the first inning to give New York a dream start but apart from Cano, none of Yankees’ hitters could live up to the expectations. B.J. Upton, Desmond Jennings and Evan Longoria combined to hit three home-runs for the Rays.
"Nothing changes. We play everybody. How many games do we have left?" Jeter said. "Win all of them, we're good, right? We don't have to worry about anybody else. We still have games left. We've got to find ways to win, that's the bottom line."
"The team is not playing good right now, but we've just got to forget about this game and just go out there and play hard tomorrow," Robinson Cano said. "We're tied. It's time to start at zero. Just keep playing hard, and forget about what happened the past
few weeks. Just focus on the game."
Rays edged their American League East Division rivals in series opener and they continued the good work in Game 2 to take a decisive 2-0 series lead. With their win, the Rays also closed down the gap between themselves and the Yankees to just two games at
the top of the standings table.
Yankees, on the other hand, will be disgusted with the quality of their game play in first two games of the series. Despite losing seven out of their last ten games, they are placed first on AL East standings. Derek Jeter looked extremely worried at the
end of the game. Surely, he will be expecting his team to fight back strongly in the finale to preserve their number 1 status.
