New York Yankees brush aside Baltimore Orioles 7-2 in Game 1 of ALDS – MLB Update
New York Yankees had an absolutely great time at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland as they routed the Baltimore Orioles 7-2 on Sunday, October 7 in the opening game of their five match series of the 2012 American League Division Series.
Credit should be given to the Yankees’ pitching rotation that executed the game plan to perfection against a high quality batting team.
Starting pitcher, C.C. Sabathia, who has starred in so many Yankees’ victories over the years, put up another match winning performance as he gave up just two runs in eight plus innings to lay the foundation of Yankees’ victory in the opener.
Striking-out seven batters, he used his fastballs and sliders very effectively to hold Baltimore to just two runs. Sabathia finished 0-2 against the Orioles during the regular season but he managed to turn things around in the playoffs with a heroic effort.
"Fastball command was good, worked off that," Sabathia said in a post game interview. "Throwing the ball pretty good getting the corners. Tried to stay out there and make some pitches."
"Being able to get out of that with a tie and give us a chance to get up and score some runs, which we did, was just a big spot," Sabathia said.
"I made mistakes," said Orioles’ pitcher Jim Johnson after taking the loss. "I obviously paid for those, and that was location."
Relief pitcher David Robertson also had a decent time on the mound as tossed up a shut-out 0.1 innings to help Yankees secure a comfortable win.
"I definitely wasn't thinking home run," Russell Martin said. "He left a fastball up and I put good wood on it."
Ichiro Suzuki provided Yankees with a perfect start as he doubled to left centre in the first inning to score the first run. Mark Teixeira did not have the best of times during the regular season but he started the playoffs on a very bright note to level
the score 2-2 in the fourth inning.
Russell Martin smacked a home-run to left and Ichiro Suzuki drove in vital runs as the Yankees scored five runs in the ninth.
