New York Yankees’ catcher Jorge Posada retires – MLB News
Major League catcher and designated hitter Jorge Posada, who has played his entire career with the New York Yankees, finally called it a day to his professional baseball career.
Some inside MLB sources have confirmed that Posada has decided not to continue in the next MLB season and will be announcing his official retirement in couple of days before the start of the training sessions.
Before retirement, Posada was linked with several MLB teams in during the offseason. As a free agent, he has been persuaded by the New York Mets along with the Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays, Philadelphia Phillies and
Texas Rangers for a potential deal but he remained firm and did not think about going elsewhere preferring to retire as a Yankee.
To Posada’s credit, he is one of the select Yankees who has ever hit at .330 or batted with 40 doubles, 20 home-runs, and 90 RBIs in a single Major League season while earning great admiration from many baseball experts.
As a very talented baseball player, he started playing as shortstop early in his career in 1988-89. His exceptional baseball skills were soon recognised as he later joined Major League Baseball in their official farm system in the Minor League.
Entering in his first Major League game in 1995 with the New York Yankees, Posada gained early fame for his tremendous hitting. Though, he was not included in the active roster until his third season with the Yankees, but from the fourth season onwards,
he played almost the entire season and never disappointed with his individual performance.
In Posada’s 16 year MLB career, he has achieved a hitting average of .273 along with 275 home-runs, 1065 RBIs and .374 OBP. These numbers show that his performance has remained consistent during his long career.
Even in the last season, Posada’s performance was exceptional with a .235 hitting average along with 14 home-runs, 44 RBIs and .315 OBP.
A five-time All Star, four-time World Series Champion and five-time Silver Slugger winner, Jorge Posada will never be forgotten for what he has achieved for himself and especially for the New York Yankees.
