New York Yankees’ catcher Russell Martin might get new deal – MLB News
The New York Yankees’ last year’s signing catcher Russell Martin might get another contract from the club extending to next three years. Previously he has been given a one year deal after he decided not to join the Los Angeles Dodgers in late 2010.
For many, these are still speculations as he will get this deal, but some inside sources have told the media that Martin will be getting another deal within few weeks or before the next season.
The Yankees general manager Brian Cashman still to confirm any news relating to Martin’s deal however, Russell’s agent Matt Colleran has recently commented in the media saying, “It’s too early to say if we’ll be able to do something for his contract, What
they want to do is not something we want to do, and what we want to do is not something they want to do. But we’ll continue talking.”
He added, “It’s not like Russell is two years away from being a free agent, He’s six months away, and considering the shape he’s in, we don’t have a problem playing out the season. We would be flexible in their budget constraints”
According to Russell’s agent, both parties are still negotiating and engaging themselves in potential talks. While if these potential talks did go ahead and succeed giving another three year deal to Russell, the Yankees roster will be stronger than ever.
Two main reasons are on the cards why the Yankees’ think Russell should be given another contract. First, he is experienced campaigner and secondly his last year’s performance was certainly a good display of skills.
He was also selected in 2011 All Star game as a Yankee and did well while overall his performance was also good as his batting average remained consistent at .237 along with 18 home runs, 65 RBIs and .324 OBP.
Russell, who used to play in the Los Angeles Dodgers in the past, is also making a great effort in this year’s Spring Training and whenever the next season is going to start, he will be all set to play another good knock even he failed to get the new deal.
