New York Yankees collapse 2-3 against Detroit Tigers to crash out of Postseason – MLB Update
After losing the cursed Game 2 of the American League Division Series, the New York Yankees tried their best to defy history and stretched the five-game series to the last game, but fell short in Game 5, losing 2-3 to the Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium
in New York on Thursday, October 6.
Ivan Nova gave away two runs in the first inning and then left the mound after the second inning citing forearm tightness to lose the game for the Yankees. Don Kelly and Delmon Young smashed back-to-back homers in the first inning to give the Tigers a dream
start in the all-important game.
After losing Game 1, Doug Fister came out strong for Tigers on the mound, tossing five spotless innings for just one run amid five hits to win the game. He started off the regular season poorly with the Seattle Mariners, but since his acquisition by the
Tigers on the mid-season trade deadline, he has performed exceptionally well.
Before the Yankees could respond, Victor Martinez drove in a single to centre-field to allow Austin Jackson a run and extend the lead to three runs. Robinson Cano’s home-run in the bottom of the fifth allowed the home-team to reduce their deficit back to
two-runs.
Acting resourcefully, Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland replaced Fister with Max Scherzer in the sixth inning who kept things tight to preserve the lead. He allowed just one run in his spell of 1.1 innings to keep Detroit one-run ahead of the AL East Champions.
Derek Jeter scored the second run for the Yankees when Mark Teixeira was allowed a walk by the otherwise precise Scherzer.
Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde then pitched perfect spells to keep the Yankees at bay and seal the encounter 3-2. Leyland had clarified that Valverde might pitch more than one inning, but orderly work by the bull-pen did not necessitate extra work from
the closer.
In the last inning, Alex Rodriguez was expected to unleash one hit out of the ballpark, but instead, was struck-out for the final out to see his team crash out of the playoffs.
The last time Detroit won against the Yankees in the ALDS, they went all the way through to the World Series. This time, with spirits high, their aim is nothing less.
