New York Yankees come from behind to level series 2-all against Chicago White Sox – MLB Review
In the first half of the 2011 season, the New York Yankees were unsurpassed. They had won five of their first six series. Yankees’ fans were jubilant and ready to host the Chicago White Sox at Yankees Stadium for the first time in the season. Before this,
they had witnessed the brilliance of their club against some of the top teams, including old rivals Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers.
New York landed at Yankee Stadium on April 25 for the outing of a four-game series with an ambition to prove their dominance against the league rivals. Allan James Burnett started the outing for the Yankees to square off against Phil Humber.
Yankees had a tough time against Humber, who held them hitless and forced the club to their 2-0 shut-out. Only Alex Rodriguez could touch a single in the seventh inning. Burnett was brilliant but gave away a single over his eight innings to receive his first
loss of the season.
After getting their second shut-out of the season, the Yankees were still sure of their comeback. However, the odds were not working and the club had to face another defeat.
Robinson Cano launched a homer and took the club into a leading position in the second inning. Brett Gardner staged a high hit and advanced the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Ivan Nova on the other hand was brilliant and had given only one run in just
over six innings.
Girardi was happy in the camp, but a sudden blow from Paul Konerko in the top of the eighth inning made his face stiff. The Yankees were in need of only two runs to pass the 3-2 lead, but the batting line-up failed in a time when their contribution was required
more than ever before.
Yankees received another blow with a 3-2 score. Girardi was now serious to reassemble his middle rotation.
The Yankees had a chance to level the series and Girardi was determined to save his second series loss. Bartolo Colon was coming to this outing after getting his first win since 2009. He struck-out six batters allowing a single run over the eight innings
and the Yankees won the game 3-2 on Wednesday, April 27.
A jubilant Girardi said, "He continues to impress us. I had no idea what to expect. I knew what he used to be, but he hadn't pitched for distance for a while."
Robinson Cano had launched a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to help his club get an early 3-0 lead. It was the driving force the 37-year-old Colon, who did not allow any batter to steal more than one base.
Now the chances were high and expectations had risen to the maximum. The Bronx Bombers entered the fourth outing with their best starter Carsten Charles Sabathia. The left-hander struck-out six batters and held the opposition to just one run over his seven
innings. It was a valuable asset for the batting squad, which had piled a 9-0 lead until the end of the sixth inning.
Yankees added three more runs to get a dominant 12-3 win, which levelled the series 2-all. Bret Gardner and Nick Swisher each launched homers. Swisher also went 3-for-4 and earned four RBIs. Gardner and Eric Nunez each went 2-for-3 and saved the club from
a serious setback.
