New York Yankees could acquire starting catcher this offseason – MLB News
New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman stated that the team could use a combination of backups instead of having a regular starting catcher, reports nydailynews.com. It has been a strange offseason for the Yankees considering they have declared things
they are comfortable with Mike Lamb at third base and Bubba Crosby will be their centre fielder.
After Russell Martin departed from New York, the team needed to sign a regular catcher to fill up that spot but the GM has not shown interest in acquiring a new catcher. He believes the solution to Yankees’ problems behind the plate is more likely to come
from some combination of backup catchers within the organisation.
However, the Yankees’ fans do not approve of his ideas. In his post, Anthony Mccarron of New York Daily News said, “But as any Yankee fan knows, pronouncements like this have a way of withering like an old Christmas tree. Crosby never did start in center
— a fella named Johnny Damon was signed — and Lamb was out when the Yanks traded for Alex Rodriguez.”
Prospect Austin Romine is thought to be the leading candidate for the catching position. But since he is only 19-years-old, it seems he will have to wait for few more years before comes his chance to secure a place on the Yankees’ big league roster.
“I think he’s outside looking in,” Cashman said of Romine in an interview. “But when you get this close to the big leagues, things can come quick if you’ve got a lot of talent and that talent closes the gap.”
Francisco Cervelli and last year’s backup catcher Stewart Chris will also have the opportunity to become a permanent of Yankees’ big league team but for now there is no proven starting catcher in the group.
It will not be a surprise to anyone if the Yankees seek to add a veteran catcher to their line-up. It seems highly unlikely the Yankees will pursue two of the best catchers in the free agent market; Mike Napoli and A.J. Pierzynski. According to source, they
are more likely to acquire someone like Colorado Rockies’ Ramon Hernandez and Cleveland Indians’ Carlos Santana.
