New York Yankees crush Seattle Mariners 7-1 to avoid series sweep - MLB Update
The American League’s New York Yankees overpowered the Seattle Mariners in the third outing of the three game series at the Safeco Field, Washington on Sunday, May 29 to avoid the series sweep.
Nick Swisher launched a striking 373-feet long one run homer off the Mariners’ starter Jason Vargas in the top of the second inning to provide his team an early 1-0 lead.
"It's a step in the right direction. I've been working really hard and feel like I can get back to form," Swisher said. "We've got our big boy on the mound. You feel like you give him more than two runs you're going to win the ballgame."
In the third inning, the Yankees’ bat completely came into action as Robinson Cano first scored an RBI single then Andruw Jones touched an RBI triple before Eduardo Nunez blistered a hit to deep left-field for an RBI single to take the lead to 6-0.
In the fourth inning Mark Teixeira stole the seventh and the last run of the game for the Yankees.
As the Yankees’ batters piled up a huge total on the board, starter Carsten Charles Sabathia tossed an impressive eight innings to earn his sixth win of the season. Sabathia held the Mariners scoreless until the sixth inning when Justin Smoak launched a
411-feet long one-run homer to left-field.
"He just knows how to pitch. He knows how to give us distance, he knows what to do and he takes it upon himself that 'I'm going to go out and do it for you,'" Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "When CC gets into a little bit of a jam there is no panic to
him. He's going to continue to execute pitches."
It was the first and the last run from the Mariners as Sabathia did not lose his momentum and tossed two more innings without allowing any run. Overall, Sabathia threw eight innings, yielded one run over five hits, walked three and struck-out five batters
to help the Yankees gain their 28th win of the season.
Closer Lance Pendleton did not allow any run on one hit to complete his one inning spell in ninth.
Vargas, on the other hand, went for six runs on five hits including a homer and walked four. He got one strike-outs but it was not enough to save him from losing his third game of the season. Reliever Jeff Gray gave one run over five hits, walked one and
struck-out one batter over four innings to restrict the Yankees.
Closer Chris Ray also remained scoreless over his two innings spell that he made in the eighth and ninth innings of the outing.
