New York Yankees crushed by Cincinnati Reds 2-5 – MLB Update
New York Yankees were crushed by Cincinnati Reds 2-5 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Sunday, May 20 in the decisive finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Raul Ibanez provided the Yankees with the perfect start as he homered to right in the sixth to break the deadlock and give his team a 2-0 lead but the Yankees were unable to score any more runs and the Reds battled past them to win the series.
Ryan Ludwick had a great time on the plate as he homered to left to reduce Yankees’ lead to 2-1 in the seventh. Ryan Hanigan also joined the party with a solo home run in the seventh to level score 2-2. B Phillips also made a useful contribution to help the Reds score three runs in the seventh and take 3-2 lead.
New York tried hard to level the score in the ninth but Ryan Ludwick’s double to left handed them their fifth loss in just six games. Reds’ closer Aroldis Chapman displayed some high quality hitting skills and starting pitcher Johnny Cueto pitched brilliantly into the eighth innings to dent New York’s confidence levels. It will be interesting to see if the Reds can put up a similar show in their next series against Detroit Tigers.
"Time to go home," Reds manager Dusty Baker said with a satisfied look on his face.
"Either inning for me is the same," Chapman said through a translator. "Maybe one day things will get complicated and I'll get some pressure, but I don't feel that."
"Home runs are American League baseball. Everyone's going to give them up. That's the bottom line," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said in a post game interview.
"He wasn't wild until the last inning. He was pretty darn good before that, so I wouldn't make too much of it," he further added.
In a game where runs were extremely hard to come by, Cincinnati made the most of available opportunities. Coming back from behind, the Reds earned an emphatic win to improve their record to 21-19 on Sunday’s evening.
