New York Yankees defeat Baltimore Orioles 6-5 – MLB Update
New York Yankees made their second-straight triumph over division rival the Baltimore Orioles 6-5 and grabbed the rain-shortened two-game series on Thursday, April 14 at Yankee Stadium in New York.
The American League’s Orioles were eager to make their seventh win in 2011, but could not accomplish it when the Yankees bat awakened in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Yankees, chasing an early five-run lead by the Orioles, broke off four innings scoreless
bad patch and railed towards winning momentum.
New York’s Robinson Cano provided a break-through with a RBI double to deep left-centre. It established entirely momentum for the Yankees as their top prospects Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez came into action with their RBI singles in the bottom of the
sixth inning. Russell Martin added another run in the seventh and trimmed the lead to 5-4.
Baltimore realising the game slipping out of their hands, struck back restricting the Yankees from earning any run in the eighth. However, the Yankees were confident when Jorge Posada launched a huge 409-feet tying homer off the Orioles’ reliever Kevin Gregg.
It forced the game into a tenth inning and Nick Swisher hit a sacrifice fly.
The Yankees manager Joe Girardi was sure of the abilities of his batters and it was highlighted in his post-game conversation with reporters.
Girardi said, "Our guys kept kinda chippin' away, and then we get the big homer from Jorge in the ninth and then the walk to Tex and the double by Alex to start the inning off. But our guys have the ability to do that."
Phil Hughes, making his third start of the season, consumed early five runs to opposition and earned his second loss with 13.94 ERA. Hughes felt relaxed when he saw recuperating performance of the batter in the later part of the inning.
"I don't have the magic potion or the answers. Hopefully it will work itself out," Hughes, who did not cross 92 mph, said. "I'm really proud of the guys, battling back after really digging us a hole there."
Hughes tossed just four innings, struck-out two and allowed five runs including a homer by the Orioles’ slugger Nick Markakis in the top of the third inning. However, it was not the case with the Orioles’ starter Jake Arrieta, who tossed four scoreless innings
before allowing his first run. Arrieta finished his six innings spell with three allowed runs and two strike-outs.
Despite receiving a humiliating defeat, the Orioles’ manager Showalter did not seemed disappointed with the pitchers. Showalter supported the pitchers saying they did many good things tonight and they just need to keep grinding and move on.
