New York Yankees defeat Baltimore Orioles 8-3 in first of two games – MLB Update
American League’s New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-3 in the first of the two scheduled games on Saturday, July 30 to take revenge of 4-2 defeat last night.
"We expect all our guys to hit, but the bottom of the order did a lot of damage today," manager Joe Girardi said. "It's always nice when everyone's contributing.”
After strong performance by the starters, the Yankees at last succeed in opening the game in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI double. Brett Gardner singled to left, allowing Dickerson and Cervelli to steal a single. Orioles managed to tie the game
in the top of the fourth inning when Craig Tatum and J.J. Hardy each scored an RBI single off the Yankees’ starter Bartolo Colon.
However, Nick Swisher launched a ballistic homer to right-centre to grab two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Cervelli again contributed an RBI single to take the lead to 5-2. In the fifth inning, Erick Chavez and Jorge Posada and Dickerson combined
to add three more runs to finalise the lead to 8-2.
Mark Reynolds homered in the eighth to create some relief for his batters but he did not receive support from the offence and the Orioles dropped their 61st game of the season.
Colon managed to get his eighth win, tossing two run five innings and striking-out six batters over 105 pitches. Cory Wade gave him full support and tossed one run three innings in crucial time. Boone Logan added insult to injury with his scoreless ninth
inning to take the Yankees to their 62nd win in 2011 MLB regular season.
"All I've got to do is keeping working hard and keep fighting to put up some good numbers in the second half," Colon said through a translator.
Orioles’ starter Chris Tillman yielded seven runs, eight hits and one walk in just over four innings. He lost his fourth game of the season, which dropped him to 2-4 with 5.16 ERA. His reliever Troy Patton allowed one run on three hits off two innings while
closer Mike Gonzalez remained scoreless in the ninth inning.
