New York Yankees defeat Boston Red Sox 6-4 as Phil Hughes throws seven innings - MLB Update
The starter Phil Hughes completes seven innings and did not give up any earned run as the New York Yankees outclass the Boston Red Sox 6-4 at Yankee Stadium, New York on August 17, 2012 in the first game of the three match series.
The Yankees kept scoring runs on regular basis in the game. On the other hand, Boston experienced a run-rampage in the third while remaining scoreless throughout the rest of the game.
By the end of the third inning, the Yankees were trailing by one run and therefore they needed their batters to connect more hits and score runs in order to surpass the Red Sox. Interestingly enough, their hitters lived up to the requirements as they managed
to strike enough number of hits afterwards that they will end up winning the match.
Their first baseman Nick Swisher and the designated hitter Derek Jeter stepped up and struck home-runs at a time when they were needed the most.
Swisher expresses his thoughts after the match.
"The way the game started, man, it's raining, two teams battling it up and the field's getting all nasty -- it just felt like a Yankee-Red Sox rivalry game," Swisher said.
What was most revealing in the match was the way Yankees bounced back from a situation where they trailed by one run. The Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi hails Jeter and is impressed by the way he is hitting home-runs even at the age of 38.
"He's an amazing player," Joe Girardi said. "He's 38 years old. He's played 15 days in a row. There aren't too many 38-year-old guys who play 15 days in a row."
While the Yankees launched a successful counter-attack late in the game, their relievers were equally impressive in the meantime. If it was not for the scoreless innings by the relief pitchers David Robertson and Rafael Soriano, they may not have won.
The fact whatever attempt the Red Sox made during the penultimate innings was defeated by the relief pitchers helped the Yankees keep their lead intact.
It was the first game of the series and the Yankees will be looking to keep the momentum going to deliver an equally good performance in the next two matches.
