New York Yankees defeat Chicago White Sox 3-2 – MLB Update
American League’s New York Yankees kept their winning impetus to the highest level to overpower the Chicago White Sox 3-2 in the first outing of the four-game series at the U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago on Monday, August 1.
Yankees scored two runs in the first and one in the third to post enough lead for the struggling White Sox. Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano joined hands in the first for two runs while Cano got a double play as he scored the third in the third inning.
As the batting piled up a relatively strong lead, the Yankees’ starter CC Sabathia held the White Sox run-less in the first three innings. He received a blow in the bottom of the fourth by the White Sox short-stop Alexei Ramirez to give away two runs. It
was however somewhat difficult game for Sabathia, who gave ten hits over eight innings and struck-out only six batters, but still managed to get his 16th win of the season, the most in 2011 regular season by any pitcher.
"I had to battle a little bit and just try to make pitches," Sabathia said. "They put some good at-bats together on me, hit some balls hard and me and Cervy (catcher Francisco Cervelli) were able to get out of some tough situations."
The 41-year-old closer Mariano Rivera did not let his age become a hurdle on his way to excellence in this season. He tossed a no-hitter ninth with one strike-out to get his 28th save with 1.74 ERA in 43 games. It was his eighth consecutive save
after losing to New York Mets on July 3.
"I thought he had to gut it up because his stuff wasn't as sharp as we've seen it in the past," manager Joe Girardi said. "He's a true ace."
Jake Peavy, on the other hand made a strong come-back after allowing three runs, as he held the Yankees from another run in his last four innings, but still lost his fifth game. He endorsed eight hits and one walk over 115 pitches and dropped his record
to 4-5 with 5.13 ERA.
"Tonight I tried to pace myself and I felt a little bit better going deeper in the ballgame," Peavy said. "That's a great sign for me and I'm excited by it."
His reliever Chris Sale also carried the run-less game but the earlier given runs could not be compensated until the end.
The White Sox received their 55th loss while Yankees grab their 65th win in this season. It was the Yankees fourth consecutive win beating Baltimore Orioles 8-3, 17-3 and 4-2 in last 3 games of 4-game series. The Yankees are now in
third place after Boston Red Sox (66) and Philadelphia Phillies (69) in the 2011 MLB season.
