New York Yankees defeat Cleveland Indians 11-7 - MLB Updates – Part 1
After bearing a series sweep from Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees crushed the League rivals Cleveland Indians 11-7 in electrifying series-opener at Yankee stadium, on Friday, June 10.
The Yankees were under constant disparagement after a humiliating defeat by the Red Sox but this game got them back on track. Robinson Cano led the game off in the first inning with an RBI single and Nick Swisher hit a sacrifice for second run before Jorge
Posada touched a third RBI single off the Indians’ starter Fausto Carmona.
The score was 3-0 when Curtis Granderson blistered a striking one-run homer off Carmona to take it to 4-0. After allowing this homer, Carmona hit a fastball to the back of Mark Teixeira, who become furious and walked to Carmona with infuriated intentions
but Home Plate umpire Dale Scott and catcher Carlos Santana did not let him reach to Carmona.
Teixeira believed that Carmona must have made this pitch with an intention to injure his neck or head. The batter was quite upset at getting hit by the pitch, as it was dangerously high and posed some risk to his neck and possibly head.
He said, "It's just disappointing when you have a guy who gives up a long home run and is getting hit around a little bit and decides to throw one close to your head. Anytime it's a purpose pitch up near my head, near my neck, I don't like that. ... You
want to send a message, just throw the ball low."
By the time both benches emptied and the managers exchanged few harsh words before Umpires sent them to their benches.
The incident did not let Carmona stabilise throughout the game, as in the third inning he gave a fifth run to Brett Gardner, who doubled to the deep right-centre allowing Cano to score. Then in the fourth inning, Alex Rodriguez launched a striking one-run
homer off Carmona.
Until the bottom of the fourth inning, the Yankees’ starter Ivan Nova had not given any run but in the fifth, he allowed the Indians’ Michael Brantley a run to reduce the lead to 1-6. In the sixth inning, he went for a huge homer by Santana and the game
moved to 2-6.
The Yankees played aggressively, as they wanted to dominate the game from the beginning.
