New York Yankees defeat Cleveland Indians 11-7 - MLB Updates – Part 2
The Yankees bashed the Indians 11-7 after coming off a series sweep from the Boston Red Sox at their home stadium.
The Yankees’ batters posted six runs until the bottom of the fourth against starter Ivan Nova who allowed his first run in the top of the fifth inning followed by a second run in the sixth inning but still managed to earn his fifth win of the season.
The Indians’ starter Carmona, after yielding six runs on eight hits including two homers and allowing three walks over four innings passed the ball to reliever Frank Herrmann before the start of the fifth inning. Herrmann managed to stop the Yankees’ bat
with his fast curveballs. Up the middle of the sixth inning though, catcher Santana made a false throw allowing Granderson to earn a seventh run on the swinging strike of Herrmann to Robinson Cano.
It was Carmona’s fifth straight loss of the season. He has not won a game since May 13 when he clobbered Seattle Mariners 5-4.
Rodriguez, after blistering a striking hit to Carmona, sent a clear message to other teams that the Yankees, despite receiving second sweep at their home ground, would not let them pass so easily.
"Forget who we're playing, you can't have teams be so comfortable against us," Rodriguez said. "I thought tonight was a good way to answer back and answer the call because the last three games at home was very embarrassing for us and it's really not acceptable
for us to play that type of baseball."
Chad Durbin replaced Herrmann in the last of the sixth inning, completed this inning without a run and entered into seventh with the same fastballs. However, in the middle of this inning, aggressive Teixeira hit a line drive triple to take it to 10-2. Then
Rodriguez bunted a single to make the score 11-2.
Kevin Whelan replaced Nova before the start of the eighth inning, gave an RBI single to Cord Phelps and passed the responsibility to Amauri Sanit. Two of the Yankees’ batters were still to come when Sanit entered the plate, tossed three balls before sending
Posada out of field on a strike-out and took Gardner on a fly out.
He started the ninth inning with a strike-out but gave an RBI single to Carlos Santana before being replaced by Lance Pendleton, who immediately allowed an RBI walk to Shin-Soo Choo. Girardi realised the situation and employed his top closer Mariano Rivera.
Initially, the move did not seem to work for the Yankees as the Indians first baseman, Matt LaPorta hit a fast line drive to right-field for an RBI double to take the game to 7-11 competitive position but Mariano made a perfect bounce back to take next two
batters. Phelps popped out to the second base while Adam Everett fouled to first base.
With this win, the Yankees have added their 34th triumph while the Indians lost their 27th outing of the 2011 Major League Baseball season. Both teams now have 34-27 win-loss record but the Yankees are four ahead in home successes with 18-14 as compared
to the Indians 14-15.
