New York Yankees defeat Kansas City Royals 9-7 – MLB Update
The New York Yankees’ bat worked in the second game against the Kansas City Royals to achieve 9-7 triumph at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City on Tuesday, August 16 to take a 2-0 lead in the three-game series.
Robinson Cano scored four RBIs while Derek Jeter and Russell Martin added two each along with a single RBI by Mark Teixeira.
"We won the game. Bottom line is we won the game," manager Joe Girardi added. "He doesn't need a mulligan. I mean, he is pitched really well. Great pitchers are hit. It's going to happen."
After the Royals gained 2-0, lead in the bottom of the first inning, the Yankees bat struggled a bit but in the third inning, Cano opened the game with his line drive RBI single to left field. Russell Martin followed Cano while he was at first and Teixeira
was at second base. Martin stroked a single to left-field allowing both the batters to score lead generating runs in the top of the third.
The Royals gained back the lead in the bottom of this inning, when Adam Gordon tied with RBI single and Miguel Cabrera launched a stunning one-run homer off the Yankees’ starter Ian Nova. Then Jeff Francoeur took the lead to 5-3 with his RBI single.
The fourth inning proved a decisive one between the clubs, when Derek Jeter opened it with his RBI single and Teixeira tied it at 5-all touching a single to right-field. While both the bases were loaded, Cano came into play another part in the Yankees’ triumph
and launched a dazzling three-run homer to take the lead to 8-5.
"He saw a ton of pitches -- he fouled off a lot of tough pitches. It's just as good as it gets. That's a great at-bat," Girardi said. "He can hit anything, that's the bottom line."
Royals’ catcher Salvador Perez tried to take his team nearer to the lead and doubled to deep centre, allowing Francoeur and Johnny Giavotella to score and reducing the lead to 8-7.
However, Jeter widened the lead to 9-7 and cemented the Yankees’ 74th win of the 2011 regular season.
Yankees’ starter Ian Nova played a bad game and allowed seven runs on nine hits of his five innings. He tossed 87 pitches to allow one walk and made just two strike-outs of his fourth loss of the season.
However, Boone Logan, Rafael Soriano, David Robertson and Mariano Rivera each provided him a dream back-up with their scoreless innings. Rivera tossed a perfect ninth to get his 32nd win of the season.
On the other hand, the Royals’ starter Danny Duffy had a nightmare game, tossing eight runs three innings extended to 90 pitches.
The Royals now have to make a perfect rebound to avoid their series sweep against one of the strongest team of the Majors.
