New York Yankees defeat Los Angeles Angels 3-2 - MLB Update
The New York Yankees’ exhibited some excellent performance from both ends to overpower the League rivals Los Angeles Angels 3-1 after an electrifying second game of the three-game series at Angel Stadium, Anaheim on Saturday, June 4.
After both the starters led the game off with some striking pitches, the Yankees’ Robinson Cano touched to left-field for a one-run homer in the top of the fourth inning and improved his home-run record to 12 in this season
"I think if he caught that one, I would have run to right field," Cano said with a grin. "It's the kind of thing where you say 'Go, go go, go,' then you see him jumping and you say 'Oh, no.'"
The Yankees got 1-0 lead in early phases but the Angels did not let them enjoy this lead even for a single inning. In the bottom half of this inning, the Angels’ Alberto Callaspo reached second base on a line drive double, he then stole third base on an
error by short-stop Derek Jeter and Jeff Mathis allowed him to earn a tying score on a sacrifice fly.
The Yankees’ Carsten Charles Sabathia and the Angels’ starter Ervin Santana each tossed another scoreless inning and the game remained tied at1-all until the top of the fifth inning. Alex Rodriguez, the current Major League leader in home-runs, went for
a devastating two-run homer to put the Yankees into a strong position.
After the Yankees achieved their desired lead, Sabathia exhibited his class with some un-playable fast curve balls. Sabathia held the Angels to just one run and were about to complete his game without allowing another run when Angels’ Maicer Izturis scored
an RBI single on a bunt drive to centre-field.
Feeling the sense of danger, the Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi immediately replaced Sabathia with closer Mariano Rivera, who threw a fastball to get Erick Aybar on fly out to short-stop.
"You try to go out and give those guys in the bullpen as much rest as possible," Sabathia said. "Our job as starters is to go deep in the game and keep those guys fresh, because they're going to be a big part of our winning down the stretch."
Sabathia threw eight innings in which he allowed just two runs on eight hits, allowed one walk and struck-out three batters to earn his seventh win of the season. With this win Sabathia now has 7-3 record with 2.80 ERA this season.
