New York Yankees defeat Los Angeles Angels 9-3 – MLB Update
The New York Yankees destroyed the league rivals Los Angeles Angels 9-3 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Wednesday, August 10.
Curtis Granderson launched a dazzling hit to the right-centre of the field allowing Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter to score against the Angels’ rookie hurler Garrett Richards to grab the 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
The rookie pitcher returned back in the second and the third inning to make his maiden game better, but the Yankees’ bat did not release the pressure off of him. Nick Swisher drove in an RBI single followed by Erik Chavez’s RBI single in the bottom of the
fourth to take the lead to 5-0.
Granderson strived hard to make a perfect rebound to remain in the game but he launched another homer to elevate the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Then Russell Martin touched an RBI in the sixth inning to force the Angels’ manager to change
his rookie hurler.
"His first three hitters weren't what you hoped," Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia said. "In between, there were some signs of his talent, settled down, and pitched some good baseball, but by then the damage was done."
Granderson bore his first loss in his maiden game but had high hopes. He tossed 91 pitches and gave away six hits and two walks. Joel Pineiro gave away a homer Robinson Cano in the seventh inning, but managed to save him in the last two innings.
The Yankees’ starter Ivan Nova on the other hand went for only three runs, one in the fourth and two in the seventh inning and gave away five hits over his six innings to get his eleventh win of the season.
"I think he's made great strides since last year as a starter," New York manager Joe Girardi said. "I think he's become more consistent. He's developed another pitch."
Rafael Soriano tossed a perfect seventh while Luis Ayala gave three hits to grab three strike-outs over two innings in the Yankees’ 70th win in 2011 regular season.
