New York Yankees defeat Minnesota Twins 6-4 in single scheduled outing – MLB Update
The New York Yankees’ put up a joint effort to help Mariano Rivera post a record and the club to defeat the Minnesota Twins 6-4 in a single scheduled outing at Yankee Stadium on Monday, September 19.
Rivera tossed a perfect ninth inning to achieve his 602nd record posting save. The 41-year-old closer defeated Trevor Hoffman’s record of 601, that was post in 2010. He also topped in all-time percentages with 89.3 beating Joe Nathan’s 89.0 saves.
"Oh, my God, for the first time in my career, I'm on the mound alone," Rivera said. "It was priceless. I didn't know it could be like that."
He worked 13 pitches and did not allow any run to gather his 43rd save of the season in 61 chances. He posted a 1.98 ERA to be able to achieve his dream mark.
Curtis Granderson set a foundation for Rivera touching a ballistic game-opening two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. Russell Martin helped Nick Swisher to score the third run in the bottom of the second. Robinson Cano tripled to deep-centre,
allowing Alex Rodriguez to earn his fourth run of the season. Having Cano on third base, Nick Swisher singled to centre for a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
Twins’ manager Ron Gardenhire had more trouble dealing with Cano and Granderson.
"For the whole line-up, it creates a lot of problems," Twins’ manager Ron Gardenhire said of Granderson and Cano. "Grandy is having one h**l of a year and Robinson Cano, I still say, is the best hitter in our league."
Allan Jones Burnett held the opposition scoreless until the third inning and then gave away four runs in the fourth inning. Twins’ first baseman Chris Parmelee and Michael Cuddyer each launched a home-run while third baseman Luke Hughes earned an RBI single.
Cory Wade also yielded three hits but managed to avoid giving any run. Boone Logan tossed six pitches to get his tenth hold. Rafael Soriano achieved his 23rd hold tossing a no-hitter one inning and then David Robertson handed the ball to Rivera
after throwing a no-hitter eighth inning.
Twins’ starter Scott Diamond struggled against the starting batters as they piled five runs and ten hits against the starter over four innings. It was third straight and the fifth overall loss for Diamond in six starts.
Yankees will now host Tampa Bay Rays for a four-game series. Solid starter Ivan Nova will square off against Wade Davis to start the inning.
