New York Yankees defeat New York Mets 5-1 – MLB Update
The New York Yankees grabbed an easy 5-1 victory over the state rivals New York Mets in the first outing of their final interleague series of the season at the Citi Field on Friday, July 1.
Mark Teixeira blistered a double to set the foundation for a three-run first inning and it was all the Yankees were looking to get their sixth straight win over in 2011 season. Robinson Cano drove in an RBI single to fix the lead to 3-0 in the top of the
first inning.
Ivan Nova, making his 16th start for the Yankees, took the game into his hands, though he allowed one run in the second inning but he stabilised quickly and managed to earn his fifth-straight win, his eighth overall. Allowing seven hits and two
walks did not make any effect on his swinging pitching, as he completed his five innings with three 57 strikes of 89 pitches.
Yankees’ Eduardo Nunez and Alex Rodriguez made an RBI each in the eighth and the ninth inning respectively to cement their club’s 5-1 win.
After Nova, Luis Ayala and Chris Wade along with David Robertson carried the impetus and restricted the Mets’ batting line-up to just one run until the end of the game. Boone Logan, Hector Noesi and Mariano Rivera entered the field for a short time and each
of them remained scoreless.
The Mets’ ace Jonathon Niese, who allowed three-runs in the first inning, made a strong come-back and took seven batters without permitting further runs over his six innings. Despite making a considerable strike back, the 24-year-old lefty could not get
a save and suffered his seventh loss in 2011 with a 3.72 ERA.
He might have won his eighth game, if he had have received little support from his batters. However, everything went wrong for him and his team as his reliever Pedro Beato, who replaced him in the eighth inning, allowed a fourth run while closer Daniel J.
Carrasco also gave away a run in the ninth inning. It resulted in the Mets 41st loss of the season.
The Yankees put in a tremendous effort as they managed to restrict the Mets’ offence and take their sixth straight victory.
