New York Yankees defeat Oakland Athletics 10-3 – MLB Update
Freddy Garcia took on Brett Anderson as New York Yankees edged past Oakland Athletics 10-3 at Overstock.com Coliseum, Oakland on Tuesday, May 31.
Curtis Granderson, who was previously unable to enlist his name for the team line-up, put an extraordinarily good effort to put the team on winning track since the start. "I knew it was there, it was just a matter of getting it back," he said. "I had to
do it to get to the big leagues.
Much that came the Yankees’ way was due largely to the contribution of a charged offence, but it was surprisingly the persistence, if not obstinacy of the Athletics to keep Anderson on the pitching plate that cost the team no less than 10 runs.
"Anderson is as good as they get," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It's hard to believe the adjustment that this guy has made. It's remarkable."
The toughest hitter Anderson was to grapple with was Granderson. "Career-wise he's been bad left-on-left but it seems like he's turned the corner this year," Anderson said. "I just fed him fastballs trying to go in and left it out over the plate. He's just
covering all sides of the plate right now. A tough out."
Granderson had an aggressive start when Anderson came on the field to pitch for Oakland. He homered to left to give an early 2-0 lead to the Yankees. A total of three hits were given up by Anderson in the inning.
Alex Rodriguez scored single to right to triple the Yankees’ lead, as David DeJesus scored the first run for an otherwise scoreless Athletics. It was Granderson who seemed to have been tasked to make things difficult for Oakland.
Curtis earned another two-run homer to take the lead to 5-1 in the fourth inning. Anderson was the constant target of the Yankees’ offence which capitalised extravagantly on the opportunities handed by Anderson, who gave up four hits in the fourth inning.
Robinson Cano made it 7-1 with his two-run homer which was brought down to 7-3 by David DeJesus. Nonetheless, Rodriguez and Cano made it 10-3. The lead was upheld successfully by the Yankees’ pitchers and turned into a perfect 10-3 by Lance Pendleton when
he pitched a shut-out ninth inning.
It will be interesting to see how the Yankees carry their winning momentum forward into their next game. Oakland put in a good performance, but their offence was unable to achieve any success against the Yankees.
