New York Yankees defeat Oakland Athletics 4-2 for series crown - MLB Update
The New York Yankees has given the Major League Baseball teams an alarming message as they have gained their full strength back with the bat in the club’s third-straight victory over the Oakland Athletics 4-2 at Overstock Stadium on Wednesday, June 1 to
enjoy their series sweep.
In the rubber game of the series, the Yankees gained an early lead like the one they achieved in the previous two games on Monday and Tuesday. This time their top slugger, Alex Rodriguez, drove in a double for an RBI single to write a 1-0 lead over the opposition.
Then after a two-run game leading homer by Josh Willingham in the first inning and two scoreless innings by the A’s starter Gio Gonzalez, the Yankees’ Nick Swisher, hammered a 373-feet long three-run homer in the fourth inning to elevate the lead 4-1.
The Yankees are leading the MLB with 82 homers due to which they have scored a 137 runs, which is 49 percent of their current total 279 runs. The club has also won their tenth straight triumph against the A’s in this season.
"Any time you win 10 in a row against a club, it just doesn't happen very often," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "They have talent over there. They have a very good pitching staff. We just kind of had our way. We were fortunate."
The Yankees’ starter Allan Jones Burnett after allowing a homer in the first inning bounced back in a remarkable way and remained scoreless in his remaining six innings. He struck-out five innings, walked three batters over seven innings spell to earn his
sixth win of the season.
Reliever Joba Chamberlain repeated his previous form and did not allow any run over one inning while closer Mariano Rivera threw a perfect ninth inning to achieve his 14th win of the season.
However, Gonzalez could not turn this game into his sixth win as he gave away four runs on five hits, walked four and struck out four batters over his six innings.
"As a team you have to attack early and keep the pressure on them," Gonzalez said. "You let them know right off the bat; you are going to give them everything you got. When it's going their way, it's going their way."
He lost his third game of the season despite receiving strong back up from reliever Joey Devine, Brian Fuentes and closer Andrew Bailey as none of these scattered any run over their small spells.
