New York Yankees defeat Seattle Mariners 10-3 in series-opener – MLB Update
The New York Yankees put in a tremendous batting performance and beat the Seattle Mariners’ pitching depth with their stunning hits and fliers to take a 10-3 win in the three game series opener at Yankee Stadium in New York, on July 25 to take a 1-0 lead.
Crushing the Mariners with dazzling strikes, it was the Yankees’ sixteenth straight win over the struggling Seattle Mariners. Heavy rain delayed the game for 2 hours to slow down the defeat for the Mariners, but Yankees did not let this delay to become a
hurdle in their strong impetus.
Mark Teixeira got an early 2-0 lead for the Yankees with his storming homer off the Mariners’ starter Jason Vargas in the bottom of the first inning. Then Derek Jeter launched a one-run homer in the third inning. Erick Nunez, Brett Gardner, Jeter, Curtis
Granderson and Teixeira then combined to destroy Vargas in the fourth inning. Each scored an RBI single to elevate the lead to 8-1. Granderson added another single in the sixth to carry it to 9-1.
The struggling Mariners’ Ichiro Suzuki made a sacrifice fly in the third inning to add the first run for his club, but after this, the Mariners had to wait four innings to touch another run. In the top of the seventh, Justin Smoak singled to right-field,
allowing Adam Kennedy to score second run. Then Brendan Ryan made third run in the top of the eighth inning.
Jeter scored his third run of the game in the bottom of the eighth to confirm the Yankees their 60th win of the season. The Yankees now hold third place in the Majors in wins after the Philadelphia Phillies’ 64 and Boston Red Sox 62.
Freddy Garcia kept his powerful pitches on throughout the game and allowed three runs and one walk in just over seven innings. He also made five strike-outs to grab his ninth win of the season. His record now has moved to 9-7 with 3.23 ERA.
Boone Logan and closer Garrison each tossed just under an inning without permitting any run. Logan also took two batters of his six pitches.
Vargas had a nightmare game, allowing eight runs on seven hits giving him the ninth loss that depraved his record to 6-9 with high 4.09 ERA this season. Chris Ray and David Pauley each allowed one run on two innings.
