New York Yankees defeat Seattle Mariners 9-3 in series-starter – MLB Update
New York Yankees crushed the Seattle Mariners 9-3 in the first outing of the three-game series at Safeco Field in Seattle on Monday, September 12 to take a 1-0 lead.
Yankees splashed five runs in the fourth inning and three in the seventh to set the game for their 89th win of the season. Derek Jeter led the game with a ground out RBI single in the top of the third inning and Mariners’ Ichiro Suzuki tied it
at 1-all playing a RBI single in the bottom of the third.
However, the Yankees showed their real destructing power in the fourth against the Mariners’ starter Felix Hernandez. Mark Teixeira made a foundation touching a one-run homer to right-field. Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher and Eric Chavez joined hands to elevate
the lead to 3-1. Swisher moved to second, when Brett Gardner touched to left-field for an RBI single. Then Chris Dickerson splashed a dazzling two-run homer to right-field to finalise the fourth at 6-1.
In the seventh inning, Austin Romine singled to right and Derek Jeter got him to second with his single. Curtis Granderson moved Austin to third and Jeter to second but Mark Teixeira struck-out to Dan Cortes before Cano doubled to deep-left-field, allowing
all base runners to score for a 9-1 lead. Cano also moved to third base on a throwing error and Nick Swisher was given a chance to add a RBI but failed and popped out to second base.
Yankees allowed only three runs, one in the third and two in the eighth. Phil Hughes threw six innings and snatched his fifth win of the season. He allowed only a single run in the third inning and struck-out three batters over his 99 innings.
After Hughes left the mound, Scott Proctor took over the responsibility and tossed a shut-out seventh but gave away two runs in the eighth. He also made three strike-outs. Luis Ayala closed down the outing pitching a crushing ninth.
Hernandez lost his 12th outing of the season. Right-hand hurler went for six runs on nine hits and also permitted four strike-outs along with two home-runs over six innings. Dan Cortes threw less than a single inning and received three runs.
Yankees are leading the American League with 89 wins and in command to reach the postseason with perfect impetus.
