New York Yankees defeat Tampa Bay Rays 9-2 to tie series 1-all – MLB Update
The American League’s Club New York Yankees romped to a 9-2 win in the second game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium in New York on Saturday, August 13 to tie the series at 1-all.
The Yankees expressed their class throughout the outing and kept swinging their gritty bat to drop the strong Tampa Bay Rays in a dominating way. They scored two runs in the second inning, five in the fifth and again two in the sixth inning to pile nine
runs.
In the bottom of the second inning, Jorge Posada singled to right-field, allowing Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano to score. After two scoreless innings, Curtis Granderson and Jorge Posada each launched shattering homers in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Posada landed the plate when all the bases were loaded and Brandon Gomes, having fresh arms has relieved the Jeremy Hellickson, but Posada did not care for anything and hammered a 388-feet long power hit to get four runs.
"It's special," Posada said. "I got an opportunity today to play -- and it's tough to sit around. It's not easy to be sitting here and look at everybody playing."
After this hit, the Rays’ Dan Jennings opened the innings with his 376-feet long one-run homer and then Ben Zobrist followed with an RBI single to reduce the lead to 7-2. However, the Yankees’ bat did not stop in the bottom of the sixth, Mark Teixeira doubled,
scoring Granderson, and then Erik Chavez grounded into fielder’s choice to pitcher, allowing Teixeira to score.
Yankees’ starter Phil Hughes on the other hand tossed brilliantly and held the Rays’ scoreless until the top of the sixth inning. He completed his six innings, allowing two runs on four hits and struck-out six batters to get his third win of the season.
He now has 3-4 record with 6.55 ERA.
"It's hard enough to pitch a really good game when you have a clear conscience so I knew I couldn't let anything distract me," he said.
Cory Wade and Hector Noesi each provided full support and remained scoreless over their short spells. Wade tossed two scoreless while Noesi worked last inning to cement the Yankees’ 72nd win of the season.
With both teams having one game to their name, the series finale will be a stunning as the Yankees will strive to save their home series while the Rays will be ready to make their mark against New York in Yankee stadium.
