New York Yankees defeat Texas Rangers 3-2 – MLB Update
The New York Yankees snatched a 3-2 win over the Texas Rangers in a 12-innings long third-game of the series at Yankee Stadium, on Thursday, June 16 to completely whitewash the Rangers for the first time in 2011.
The Yankees made one run each in first, sixth and twelfth inning while the Rangers could touch two runs only in the fifth inning.
New York started the game with an RBI single against the Rangers’ starter Christopher John in the bottom of the second inning. The Rangers, on the other hand made two runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead but they could not enjoy this lead
for long as the Yankees’ Jorge Posada drove in an RBI single to tie it at 2-all in the bottom of the sixth inning.
As starter Brian Gordon allowed two runs in the fifth inning, the Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi replaced him with reliever Hector Noesi, who threw one scoreless inning. The Rangers’ manager Ron Washington, on the other hand, expressed full confidence of his
starter Wilson and kept him pitching until the eighth inning.
"The last 24 hours, it was nuts," Gordon said. "Once I was on the field, I was comfortable. I had the ball in my hand, I knew what to do.”
The Rangers’ manager Ron Washington praised the way Gordon pitched.
"He has definitely evolved. I don't remember him being able to move the ball around like he did today."
Wilson acted as per the expectations of the manager and did not allow any further run, however he made ten strike-outs over eight innings spell. He tossed 129 pitches and allowed only three walks but remained winless.
Due to scoreless innings of the Rangers’ reliever Darren Oliver and the Yankees’ relievers David Robertson and Mariano Rivers, the game moved into extra innings. Darren and Robertson tossed scoreless one inning while Rivera threw no-score two innings.
Rivera kept pitching in the tenth inning and did not allow any run. The Rangers’ closer Michael Kirkman restricted the opposition to no score in the tenth inning. Cory Wade tossed the eleventh inning for the Yankees and managed to escape while Kirkman continued
his pitching in the eleventh inning.
Wade also escaped the twelfth inning but Kirkman could not keep his game going and allowed a game ending RBI single to Brett Gardner. With this win, the Yankees earned their 39th game of the season while the Rangers lost their 34th.
