New York Yankees defeated by Atlanta Braves 5-10 at Yankee Stadium – MLB Update
New York Yankees were defeated by Atlanta Braves 5-10 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Wednesday, June 20 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Despite losing the series to their National League east rivals, the Yankees are still first placed on the American League East Division standings table and it will be interesting to see if they can put things back on the right track in the next series against the red hot New York Mets.
"We're really, really good when Jason's swinging the bat well," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said.
"He just didn't have great location today," Girardi said of Phil Hughes.
The Braves made a very positive start to the contest and Freddie Freeman homered to right centre in the first inning to give his side a crucial 3-0 lead. Captain Derek Jeter kept his team in the hunt by adding to solo home run to right in the first.
Martin Prado, David Ross and Jason Heyward all homered against Yankees’ starting pitcher Phil Hughes to extend Braves’ lead to 6-1.
"When Jeter caught that one in the first, I was like 'here we go,'" Ross said.
Eric Chavez, Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano showed great hitting skills as they all connected against Tommy Hanson to make the score 5-6. Heyward hit his second home run in the eighth inning to help his take establish complete control over the contest.
"It's just that kind of ballpark," Heyward said, "but at the same time we got two teams that are capable of hitting some home runs."
"It's been up and down, like a lot of our other hitters," manager Joe Girardi said of Rodriguez's season.
Credit must be given to the Braves for putting up a brilliant fight in second game of the series to break Yankees’ ten games winning streak.
When Bobby Valentine was managing New York Yankees, he had said that he will rather have 8-2 or 7-3 than a ten game winning streak as it is usually followed by a six or seven game losing streak.
Considering Yankees’ second straight loss on Wednesday, it seems Valentine was absolutely right.
