New York Yankees drop outing against Detroit Tigers 3-5 – MLB Update
The New York Yankees had received a nightmare 3-5 defeat in game two of the playoffs series against the Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, October 2 and the American League Division Series is now tied at 1-all.
After winning 9-3 in the first outing on Saturday, the Yankees morale was at an all time hight and the bull-pen was looking to record a dominating 2-0 lead in the five game series. The Yankees suffered due to their batting and pitching, which let them down
at a crucial time.
Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera, though having some problems with his form, never showed a loose hand while on the batting plate. Cabrera led his club into a much needed 2-0 lead with the kind of hit his camp was hoping to see. The first-baseman entered the mound
for his first at-bat, received two straight walks and then touched a fastball off Freddy Garcia to right-field for a two-run homer.
After this hit, the Tigers had to wait five innings before they could score another run. Cabrera was also the part of this run. Austin Jackson was on third, as Delmon Young was on first, when Cabrera stroked a single to centre-field, allowing Jackson to
score the third run. Victor Martinez then singled to centre-field for the fourth run and the Tigers enjoyed their 4-0 lead at the top of the sixth inning.
Until then, Tigers’ starter Max Scherzer had restricted the Yankees’ strong batting line-up to no-score. Scherzer allowed only two hits and four walks over his six innings and struck-out five batters to record his first post-season win. Scherzer’s pitching
technique worked, as he held the Yankees’ Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson helpless with his perfect changeups, sliders and fastballs.
Just after Scherzer left the mound and Joaquin Benoit was handed over the responsibility, he worked a perfect seventh. However, in the eighth, Curtis Granderson hammered a relief generating one-run homer off Benoit. It added a little life to the Yankees’
camp but the Tigers had recorded their domination.
Tigers’ Kelly took his club into a 5-1 lead in the top of the ninth inning. Yankees’ Nick Swisher opened the bottom of the ninth with a homer and then Allan Jones hit a sacrifice fly but failed to take his club back into the outing.
The packed stadium was stunned to see their heroes in a helpless position throughout the outing. The Yankees’ bull-pen however was not as worried as were their fans.
