New York Yankees edge Chicago White Sox 4-2 in series finale – MLB Update
New York Yankees edged Chicago White Sox 4-2 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Sunday, July 1 in the finale of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Phil Hughes continued to impress the critics as he pitched with great control and accuracy to improve to 9-6 this season. Yankees’ starting pitcher pitched eight effective innings, giving up just two runs in the first inning and seven hits over the next
seven.
Hughes had tossed up eight scoreless innings in his previous start and he continued his good work on Sunday evening to help New York level the series 2-2.
"Sometimes they're not going to have their best stuff and they got to figure out a way to get through it," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "And that's also a process, too -- figuring out how to get through things. And today he did. That's a good sign."
Third baseman Eric Chavez connected for a two run shot in the second inning to keep the Yankees in the game and Robinson Cano, who wasted a chance with bases loaded, homered to right in the third to break the tie and give the Yankees a decisive 4-2 lead.
"He was throwing strikes, working quick," Yankees’ short-stop Derek Jeter said in a post game interview. "It was good for us because it was hot out there. He was in control the entire game."
"It was great to see Phil pitch well today," Sabathia said who is recovering from his injury.
Manager Joe Girardi might have made some tactical mistakes in the first two games of the series but he executed his game plan to perfection in the last two to help Yankees stay at the top of American League East Division standings.
Credit should also be given to the bullpen that produced masterful performances under immense pressure. Ace C.C. Sabathia and veteran Andy Pettitte had to be placed on the disabled list last week due to injuries. However, despite losing two of their best
pitchers, the Yankees gave up just two runs against the White Sox in last two games.
