New York Yankees edge Cleveland Indians 4-2 – MLB Update
New York Yankees routed the Cleveland Indians 4-2 at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday, August 26 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Yankees, who made a large number of errors in Game 2 of the series, executed their game plan to perfection on Sunday to secure an extremely important victory.
Yankees’ defence and pitching rotation in particular showed great composure and character as they created all sorts of problems for Indians’ batting line-up. Starting pitcher Freddy Garcia put up a decent show as he gave up just two runs on four hits in
four plus innings.
Relief pitcher David Robertson, Boone Logan and Rafael Soriano combined to pitch five scoreless innings as New York held on to their lead comfortably to move four games ahead of second placed Tampa Bay Rays on the American League East Division standings
table.
"We're really fortunate," manager Joe Girardi said.
"These are important games down the stretch," Girardi said. "We need wins and to win series. That's the way to do it, win series."
Ichiro Suzuki, who was acquired by Manager Joe Girardi last month, provided the Yankees with a great start as he singled to centre in the second inning to break the deadlock. Derek Jeter also made a useful contribution, adding a groundout to third to double
the lead to 2-0.
"It feels fine right now," Soriano said after getting struck in the ninth inning. "It hit my glove or my hand, I'm not sure which one first."
"We pitched OK, which made for a decent ballgame," Indians’ manager Manny Acta said. "That makes it easier to take than when you're trailing by a ton of runs and it sucks the energy out of everybody."
Nick Swisher earned an RBI single to centre and Curtis Granderson homered to right in the sixth to lift the Yankees to a much needed win.
Indians’ starter Ubaldo Jimenez gave up three runs and eight hits in five innings to take his 13th loss of the season. He will be looking to bounce back strongly from a humiliating defeat.
