New York Yankees edge Cleveland Indians 5-4 in series finale – MLB Update
New York Yankees continued their stunning winning streak as they edged the Cleveland Indians 5-4 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Wednesday, June 27 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Eric Chavez made the most of available opportunities in a game that was played on a very competitive note. With the Indians leading 1-0, Chavez doubled to deep left and Robinson Cano scored to help the Yankees comeback from behind to take a crucial 2-1 lead.
Yankees’ second baseman Robinson Cano put immense pressure on the Indians’ bullpen as he hit a go ahead home-run to left in the sixth inning to take the score 4-3 in New York’s favour.
Cano is having an excellent time on the plate. His home-run on Wednesday evening was his 18th of this year and he will be looking to continue his excellent hitting to earn a huge pay day at the end of the season.
Starting pitcher Andy Pettitte allowed just two runs with seven strike-outs before he retired with an ankle injury. With ace C.C. Sabathia already on a 15-day DH List, Girardi has very limited options to work with.
"No one's going to feel sorry for us," manager Joe Girardi said.
"I wanted to go out and pitch Friday, but it's early in the season and I want to be healthy," Sabathia said. "If Friday I got out there in the bullpen and couldn't go, that would put us in a really tough spot."
With their win, the Yankees also completed their emphatic series sweep against the Indians. Throughout the series, Manager Joe Girardi and company used their home conditions superbly, outplaying their opponents in finer details of the game.
"We battled hard up until the end but we still fell short," Cleveland manager Manny Acta said. "We player better, better baseball today. I really liked the at-bats, especially at the end."
Credit must be give to the Yankees for the consistency they shown in June and it will be interesting to see if they can maintain their excellent form to make it to the playoffs.
