New York Yankees edge Detroit Tigers 7-6 – MLB Update
New York Yankees edged Detroit Tigers 7-6 at the Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Friday, April 27 in the opening game of their three game series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Alex Rodriguez put up a fine show as he singled to right in the first to help the Yankees take 1-0 lead. Tigers’ first baseman Prince Fielder and third baseman Miguel Cabrera looked extremely comfortable on the plate as they both singled in the third to
let the Tigers secure 3-1 lead.
Starting pitcher Justin Verlander looked completely out of sorts and the Yankees took complete advantage of his unforced errors to secure a thrilling victory.
"I'm at third. When Aviles turns around, I couldn't see it," Derek Jeter said. "You really can't see where the ball is. I saw Alex."
"You're going up against one of the best pitchers in the game, and scoring runs against that guy is not easy," " Russell Martin said. "But we as a team battled, we got his pitch count up a little bit and if he made a bad pitch at a certain time, we jumped
on it."
"I wasn't worried about what was going on," Verlander said. "I had to worry about pitching against the New York Yankees."
With their win over the Tigers, the Yankees improved their win-loss record to 11-8. Joe Girardi and his men have shown some great mental strength, courage and fighting spirit in the last couple of weeks to better their winning percentage to more than .500.
Yankees had a mad a poor start to their 2012 regular season as they suffered series sweep at the hands of Tampa Bay Rays. However, since then New York has definitely raised their game play to a higher level and it will be interesting to see if they can put
up similar number throughout the season o make it to the World Series finals.
Detroit, on the other hand, faced yet another humiliating defeat. Jim Leyland and company have lost seven out of their last eight games and they looked short of answers once more on Friday night.
