New York Yankees edge Los Angeles Angels 5-3 – MLB Update
New York Yankees put up a clinical show as they beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-3 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Saturday, July 14 in Game 2 of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball.
Manager Joe Girardi and his men executed their game plan to perfection on Saturday and the Yankees continued their impressive winning streak to consolidate their position at the top of American League East Division standings table.
"I think this team is playing about as well as it can because we're getting contributions from a lot of different guys," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said.
To their credit, the Angels put up a solid fight right until the end of the game. Alberto Callaspo and Bobby Wilson drove in crucial runs but the Yankees, as always, were not prepared to give up. Another powerful pitching performance has now put them eight
games ahead of the second placed Baltimore Orioles.
"Those guys don't swing at a bad pitch," Garcia said. "They're a pretty tough lineup."
"Although he gave up a couple of home runs, pitched better than his line score shows," Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia said of starter Jerome Williams. "He had good stuff today."
Starting pitcher Freddy Garcia continued to impress the critics as he pitched five effective innings against one of the most electrifying offences in the American League. Allowing just five hits and three runs with four strike-outs, he was determined to
grab his fourth win of the season. Relief pitcher Rafael Soriano pitched a perfect ninth for his 22nd save of the season.
"You want to support your starter right away," Cano said, "do the little things."
Callaspo singled to right in the first inning to put Los Angeles 2-0 ahead. Robinson Cano homered to left-centre and Derek Jeter scored to bring New York back into the contest. Granderson hit a two run home-run to right in the third inning and Cano earned
an RBI single to centre in the sixth and the bullpen held off the Angels to give Yankees 2-0 lead in the series.
