New York Yankees edge Minnesota Twins 7-6 – MLB Update
New York Yankees edged Minnesota Twins 7-6 at the Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Thursday, April 19 in their regular season encounter of the 2012 Major League Baseball.
The Yankees showed great determination, character, composure and mental toughness in a game that was played on an extremely competitive note. The Twins led the series 2-1 going into the fourth and final game and they were hoping to win their first away series
of the season.
Centre Fielder Curtis Granderson played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash with five hits to match his career high. The striker had an absolutely memorable time on the plate as he hit three home runs in the first four innings to give his side
complete control of the situation. Driving in four runs, he scored more than half of the Yankees’ final score.
Granderson will be hoping to continue his excellent form throughout the season to become a leading candidate for the 2012 Most Valuable Player Award. Mark Teixeira also made a useful contribution hitting his first home run of the season.
"I enjoyed it," said Yankees’ Reggie Jackson. "I think the nicest part was that he had two more chances to hit four. I was making sure I was watching the TV."
"A lot of work went into today before we actually stepped onto the field. Had some big issues with timing," said Granderson.
"What he did today is a special day," manager Joe Girardi said. "He should cherish it."
Rising to the occasion, the Yankees handled the pressure absolutely brilliantly to level the series. They now have a decent 7-6 win-loss record this season.
Although Yankees’ fans and General Manager Brian Cashman will not be satisfied with their current position, the team has certainly shown signs of improvement over the last couple of weeks.
C.C. Sabathia, Phil Hughes, Hiroki Kuroda and Freddy Garcia form a respectable pitching attack but unfortunately for the Yankees, the combinations have not worked out for them. It will be interesting to see if Joe Girardi and company can carry their good
form into the next series to lift their spirits.
