New York Yankees edge New York Mets 4-3 to level series – MLB Update
New York Yankees showed great determination and fighting abilities as they rallied past their arch rivals New York Mets 4-3 at Citi Field in New York, NY on Sunday, June 23 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Credit must be given bullpen that put up a powerful performance to help the Yankees comeback from behind to catch an impressive victory over their crossroad rivals.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis provided the Mets with a perfect start as he homered to left in the third inning to put his side 1-0 ahead.
Josh Thole had an RBI groundout to first in the fourth inning to double Mets’ advantage to 2-0 and Chris Young singled to right to extend the lead to 3-0.
Raul Ibanez turned things around for the Yankees with a three run home run in the seventh inning that levelled score at 3-3.
Third baseman Eric Chavez hit a tie breaking home run in the seventh that also bailed out starting pitcher Ivan Nova, who left the Yankees trailing 3-0 in the sixth.
"It's kind of been a common theme for us this year. They've been so good, even in tight games like this," catcher Russell Martin said. "They just make pitches and they get us out of jams. So, they've saved us more than once this year. Not that we can get used to it, but it's really nice to have that."
"He took a big swing, hit it off the end of the bat. I took a step back, then tried to make a play I really shouldn't have," Lucas Duda said of Nick Swisher in a post game interview.
The Mets, who had the better of their opponents in the opening game, were unable to handle the pressure on Sunday evening and the Yankees snapped the three game losing streak.
With their win, Joe Girardi and company have strengthened their position at the top of American League East Division standings table and it will be interesting to see if they can beat the Mets in the finale to earn a rare series win at Citi Field.
