New York Yankees edge past Boston Red Sox 4-3 – MLB Update
New York Yankees had another successful outing as they edged past the Boston Red Sox 4-3 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Tuesday, October 2 in second game of their three match series.
Yankees’ pitching rotation played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash. Starting pitcher David Phelps led from the front as he gave up just three hits and two runs in five plus innings to keep Red Sox on the defensive.
Striking-out batters at regular intervals, Phelps created all sorts of problems for the Red Sox’s batting line-up.
Eduardo Nunez reached on an infield single to shortstop in the second inning to put Yankees on the board. Raul Ibanez stunned the Red Sox with a two run home-run to right in the ninth inning as the match entered a gripping phase.
Ibanez continued to put pressure on Boston’s pitching rotation, delivering the tie breaking single to left in the 12th as the Yankees secured their third straight win.
Manager Joe Girardi will be extremely pleased with the kind of fighting spirit he witnessed from the Yankees on Tuesday evening. It will be interesting to see if they can continue their good work in the post-season.
"We stuck together. We stayed after them, and we were able to pull it out," Ibanez said. "It's crunch time for us, and we all know that."
"If you win, you win the division. That's the bottom line," manager Joe Girardi said. "And we have the chance to have the best record, and that's the bottom line and that's a good feeling that you can control that."
"I must've thanked Ibanez 100 times," said Mark Teixeira. "Raul is my favorite player right now. I guarantee I'm the happiest guy on the team because it could not have gone worse for me personally, but we won."
Relief pitchers Boone Logan, Joba Chamberlain, David Robertson and Rafael Soriano combined to pitch four plus solid innings to take the game into the extra inning. However, it was closer Derek Lowe who claimed the win after he pitched two scoreless innings
to help Yankees take an impassable 2-0 lead against their arch rivals.
