New York Yankees edge past Seattle Mariners 2-1 – MLB news
New York Yankees continued their brilliant form as they edged past the Seattle Mariners 2-1 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Sunday, June 9 in the finale of their four match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
With their win, the Yankees secured a deserving series win and also improved their record to 37-26 to consolidate their position at the top of the American League East Division standings table. It will be exciting to see if Manager Joe Girardi and his men
can keep up the good work to replace the Red Sox before the All Star break.
Starter David Phelps produced an outstanding performance on the mound as he allowed just three hits and one run in six innings, laying the foundations of an impressive Yankees’ victory. Striking out batters at regular intervals, he managed to keep Mariners’
batting line-up under immense pressure.
However, it was relief pitcher David Robertson who grabbed his fourth win of the season after he pitched the scoreless eighth. Closer Mariano Rivera pitched the perfect ninth to save his 23rd game of the year.
“K Long liked the matchup,” Girardi said of hitting coach Kevin Long. “And so did I. So we stuck with it. Sometimes you're thinking about your hitter and what he likes. And we liked the matchup.”
For Mariners, starting pitcher Felix Hernandez pitched with great control and accuracy as he gave up just one run in seven innings while striking out seven batters. However, Hernandez was unlucky to end up on the losing side.
“It's really nice. Usually I don't get a chance to be in that spot, especially with a right-hander out there,” said the journeyman catcher. “Fortunately, Joe had confidence in me and I went up there trying to see a ball up and over the plate. Fortunately,
he left one for me and I was able put I through the hole.”
Brett Gardner broke the deadlock in the second innings with an RBI single centre. Mariners fought back to keep the contest alive. Chris Stewart drove in the tie breaking run in the bottom of the ninth to help his side clinch a thriller.
