New York Yankees edged New York Mets 5-4 to complete series sweep – MLB Update
New York Yankees edged New York Mets 5-4 in a thrilling encounter at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Sunday, June 10 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Joe Girardi and company continued their impressive winning streak on Sunday evening to complete their emphatic series sweep against their arch rivals.
The Mets took an early 1-0 lead, thanks to Vinny Rottino who singled to centre in the second. Jordany Valdespin had an RBI double to right in the second to put NY Mets 3-0 ahead
However, Yankees’ Russell Martin, who had one his career best nights on Sunday, rose to the occasion to bring Yankees right back into the contest.
The catcher homered to right in the seventh inning to change the complexion of the game. Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez also made useful contributions scoring twice in the eighth.
However, fittingly, it was Martin who led his team to a stunning triumph with a tie breaking home run in the bottom of the ninth.
"I worried, yes," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I saw him go down a little bit, but someone pulled him up and he walked quickly, so my worries went away."
"Any play he makes that's a heads-up play doesn't surprise me," Girardi further added, "because he's been around the game and understands what he needs to do."
"I tried to jump in the air to celebrate, and I got about 2 inches off the ground," Martin said. "But I still managed to touch home plate, and it feels good."
Credit goes to the Captain Derek Jeter for the way he has led his team out of a slump. The Yankees lost their first three games of the season to Tampa Bay Rays but it seems they have rediscovered the winning formula since then.
With their triumph over their neighbours, they have now gone to second place on the American League East Division standings table and it will be exciting to see if they can replace leaders Tampa Bay Rays before the All Star Break.
