New York Yankees face media in ‘interactive’ paintball contest
New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman recently came up with an idea to pin the club against the media in a contest. What contest? Paintball.
The New York Yankees know that their efforts to generate media attention don’t have to be too much, but the significance of the event was the club’s attempt to getting journalists to interact with the club on a different level. A level of more understanding.
The Yankees are busy in Tampa, Florida, preparing for the Major League Baseball season. They have a few weeks left until the 2011 season kicks off. As Cashman got caught in a rain of paintballs while crawling through the trenches, the two teams did well
to pass away the time in the light mood. The Yankee players were nowhere near Lutz.
The event was the brainchild of Yankes general manager Cashman. Form the Yankees’ end, the coaching staff and the front office joined in on the fun.
“I think it allows people to let their guard down a little bit and allows the media to get to know these guys on a more personal level," Cashman said. "I think it's a good thing to do. It changes the environment, just for a day, and we all go away better
for it."
Manager Joe Girardi was also present in the competition. He helped the Yanks through the series of matches which eventually felt in favour of the club. The media lost their bid to better the Yankees as they crashed and burned on a one to four tally in five
games played.
“It's a different side for all of us,” Girardi said. “When we're working together, there’s professionalism and tough questions that you have to ask. You can't be quite as loose and have as much fun sometimes. For lack of a better term, we get to all let
our hair down a little bit and see different sides of each other, which is enjoyable to me."
With the season fast approaching, the event would have surely helped the staff enjoy their presence in Florida.
