New York Yankees fall to Minnesota Twins 4-5 – MLB Update
New York Yankee lost to the Minnesota Twins 4-5 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Tuesday, September 25 in second game of their three match series.
Starting pitcher Phil Hughes took his 13th loss of the season after he gave up six hits and four runs in six plus innings. Relief pitchers Boone Logan and Derek Lowe combined to toss up two sharp innings but the Twins were too hot to handle at
their home ballpark.
"It's tough," Hughes said. "I feel like I was throwing the ball well. It's a tough one to lose."
"I was hoping so," he further added. "But I don't make those decisions. I pitch until I'm told to."
"The inning was so long and he'd worked so hard, and Boonie had done a good job in his career against Span, I decided to go with him," Girardi said.
Nick Swisher displayed some top quality hitting skills as he homered to right in the fourth inning to break the deadlock and put New York on the board. Russell Martin smacked a solo home-run to left centre in the seventh to stretch Yankees’ lead to 3-1.
Twins fought back brilliantly, scoring four runs in the seventh to put Yankees under immense pressure. Andruw Jones homered to left in bottom of the ninth to reduce Twins’ lead to 5-4 but the Yankees were unable to cross the finish line.
"It's easy to look back and criticize when your lefty who has been money all year doesn't get it done," catcher Russell Martin said. "I have to block the ball. That's what changed the inning."
Yankees secured a comfortable 6-3 win in the opener and they were looking to continue their good work in Game 2 to take a decisive 2-0 series lead. Credit should be given to the Twins who played out of their skins on Tuesday evening to force the series into
the decider.
Despite taking the loss, Yankees are placed first on the American League East Division standings table. Manager Joe Girardi will be expecting his men to regroup and fight back to put things back on track.
