New York Yankees floor Baltimore Orioles 8-5 - MLB Update
New York Yankees beat Baltimore Orioles 8-5 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Monday, May 14 in the opening game of their two match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Mark Teixeira played a key role in deciding the outcome of the game as the Yankees won for the fourth time in five games. The Orioles had the first laugh with J.J Hardy singling to centre in the first inning to give them 1-0 lead. Adam Jones and Hardy combined
to make a brilliant play to extend the lead to 2-0 in the same inning.
Nick Swisher helped the Yankees come back into the contest with a double to deep centre and Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano scored. Curtis Granderson also looked very comfortable on the mound as he homered in the fifth to let New York take a valuable 3-2
lead.
"I hope that helps put me on a roll," Teixeira said. "I'd like to say yes. I want to be positive, but the truth is ... not really. I'm just trying to grind through it. In this game, you're always playing through something."
"On that last play I twisted it," Yankees’ starting pitcher Ivan Nova said. "I don't want to miss any starts. Hopefully, it will feel better. It is a little (swollen) right now."
"I tried to make throw before I caught it," Chris Davis said. "It was hit hard. But it's still a play that's got to be made."
J.J. Hardy hit a towering home run for the Orioles in the fifth to make things complicated but the Yankees ended the game on an extremely strong note with Raul Ibanez, Robinson Cano and Swisher making the most of available opportunities in the sixth to level
score at 5-5.
Teixeira hit a towering home run in the seventh to dent Baltimore’s confidence levels and then Eric Chavez hit a sacrifice fly to centre in the ninth to win the game for the Yankees. The Orioles are one of the strongest teams in American League and they
are expected to bounce back muscularly in the finale of this series.
