New York Yankees hammer New York Mets 9-1 – MLB Update
New York Yankees hammered New York Mets 9-1 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Friday, June 8 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball.
The Yankees continued their incredible run at their home ballpark as they dominated their arch rivals in all aspects of the game. After making a poor start to the season, it seems Joe Girardi and company are finally finding themselves in their comfort zone.
Credit must be given to the Captain Derek Jeter for leading his team out of trouble from testing times. If the Yankees can produce similar performances in the next two games of this series, surely, they will grab the first place on American League East Division
standings table.
The offence, who had been struggling to give results over the last few weeks, made the most of available opportunities on Friday evening as the Yankees put up a huge total on the board.
Robinson Cano homered to right in the second inning to put the Yankees 2-0 ahead. Another home run from Cano in the third inning gave New York complete control of the contest.
"That's a guy you want to go and be aggressive because you don't want to get behind the count," Cano said. "He's got some great pitches."
"A couple of extra days and I felt fine," Mets’ starting pitcher Johan Santana said. "I just didn't have my feeling for a couple of my pitches. There were times when they stayed up and when you leave pitches up, you know, they're a pretty good team and in
this ballpark, you keep pitches up, they end up out of the park, and that's what happened."
Nick Swisher also joined the party in the third, hitting a might home run to left to extend Yankees’ lead to 5-0. Adam Jones also looked extremely comfortable on the plate, adding a solo home run in the third to cap a four run third inning.
With momentum on their side, the Yankees continued to pressurise their neighbours, taking an impassable 9-0 lead in the seventh. Lucas Duda scored the only run for New York Mets in the bottom of the ninth.
