New York Yankees held off by Los Angeles Angels 8-10 – MLB Update
New York Yankees were held off by Los Angeles Angels 8-10 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Sunday, July 15 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Los Angeles should be given a lot of credit for pushing the Yankees to their limits throughout the series. Joe Girardi and company held their nerves to secure a narrow 6-5 win in series opener.
Yankees prevailed in another thrilling encounter in Game 2 but it was the Angels who got the better of their opponents in the finale to salvage some of their lost pride.
Shortstop Erick Aybar hit his fourth home-run of the season to give the Angels a perfect start. Albert Pujols also homered to left in the first inning to extend Angels’ lead 2-0, putting Yankees’ starting pitcher Ivan Nova under immense pressure.
Alex Rodriguez kept New York in the game as he homered to right in the first inning and Derek Jeter singled to centre in the second to add spice to the proceedings but the Angels were determined to get their first win of the series.
"What an awesome situation," Rodriguez said in a post game interview. "We just came up a little short."
Maicer Izturis hit a home-run to right in the sixth inning and Albert Pujols grounded into double play to make the score 6-4 in Angels’ favour. Aybar and Mark Trumbo drove in crucial runs in the eighth and the ninth as the Angels took an impassable 10-5
lead.
"What many would consider a safe lead, those guys aren't going to quit playing," the Angels’ manager said of the Yankees. "We walked four guys in the ninth inning. We kind of loaded the gun for them, and they almost pulled the trigger. So it was good for
us to hold on, but you need to make pitches. This was a rough series for some guys in our bullpen."
Teixeira homered to right and Curtis Granderson added a single in the bottom of the ninth but the Angels held on to complete a much needed victory.
