New York Yankees humble Boston Red Sox 10-3 – MLB Update
New York Yankees put up a masterful offensive performance to humble their arch rivals Boston Red Sox 10-3 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Friday, July 27 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Mark Teixeira grounded into fielder’s choice to second in the first inning and Curtis Granderson scored to level it 1-1 for New York. Raul Ibanez displayed some top quality hitting skills as he homered to right in the first to give Yankees a crucial 3-1
lead.
Teixeira had a sacrifice fly to left in the third and Russell Martin connected for a three run short in the fourth inning as the Yankees took complete control of the situation. Curtis Granderson ended the game on an extremely positive note for his team as
he hit a grand slam in the eighth to dent Red Sox confidence levels.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Phil Hughes overcame a shaky start to pitch seven solid innings. Overall, Hughes gave up just three runs on five hits with five strike-outs for his 10th win of the season. Relief pitcher David Robertson allowed just a
hit in the eighth and Cody Eppley struck-out twice in the scoreless ninth.
"He did a nice job after we got the lead to 6-3," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said of Hughes in a post game interview. "He settled down nicely."
Boston’s starter Aaron Cook took the loss after he leaked six runs and seven hits in just four innings. Reliever Mark Melancon paid the ultimate price for his errors on the mound, conceding four earned runs in just one inning pitched.
"We're two games under .500. We're the Boston Red Sox, so if anyone's thrilled with where we're at they better reevaluate because I don't like losing. I know everyone else doesn't like losing," Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia said. "We've got to play
better, now."
Yankees, who are at the top of American League East Division standings, are in top form these days and it should not be a surprise if they continue their domination in Game 2 as well.
