New York Yankees humiliate Baltimore Orioles 17-3 in third outing of series – MLB Update
American League’s New York Yankees crushed the Baltimore Orioles 17-3 in the third game of the four-game series at Yankee Stadium in New York on Saturday, July 30 to take a 2-1 lead.
Yankees’ batting destroyed the Orioles’ starter Zach Britton with their stormy hitting to post 12 vital runs in the first inning. Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher, Andruw Jones, Russell Martin and Eduardo Nunez each scored an RBI single to make the first five
runs of the inning. Then Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira joined hands to take the game to 9-0.
After this run, the Orioles’ camp changed their reliever, but the Yankees bat did not stop, as Robinson Cano again scored an RBI single while Swisher launched a dazzling 412-feet long two-run homer to finalise the first inning to 12-0. Brett Gardner contributed
to kick off the second inning with his RBI single and Cano scored his fourth run of the game to completely destroy the Orioles’ pitching depth.
"We expect all our guys to hit, but the bottom of the order did a lot of damage today," manager Joe Girardi said. "It's always nice when everyone's contributing."
Ivan Nova gave his first run in the third inning but completed his seven innings allowing only two runs and six hits while striking-out six batters to grab his ninth win of the season. Luis Ayala also allowed one run over one inning but Rafael Soriano did
not yield any run in the ninth to take his club into another easy triumph.
Jones hammered a homer in the third inning while Cano scored his fifth run in the sixth inning to take the game to 17-2. Orioles’ Mark Reynolds scored the third run in the eighth inning to reduce the losing margin to 17-3.
Britton allowed nine runs on seven hits over less than an inning spell while Jason Berken gave away seven runs on eight hits in just over two innings.
"It wasn't about stuff today. It was about execution," Britton said. "It's tough to swallow. The game's over in the first inning. As a position player, I can only imagine what they're thinking."
Chris Jakubauskas allowed one run over three innings. Mark Hendrickson, Mike Gonzalez and Troy Patton remained scoreless over their short spell but could not get their team back into the game.
