New York Yankees humiliate Chicago Cubs 10-4 to earn series 2-1 – MLB Update
The New York Yankees overpowered the League rivals Chicago Cubs 10-4 at Wrigley Field, Chicago on Sunday, June 19 to clinch the series 2-1.
The Yankees bat exhibited their finest class as they kept scoring throughout the game. They scored one run each in the first and sixth, two in fourth and three each in eighth and ninth inning to earn their 41st win of the season. Their pitchers
on the other hand allowed just four runs, one in first and three in fourth inning.
Brett Gardner launched 386-feet long one-run homer off the Cubs’ starter Randy Wells in the top of the first inning to take 1-0 early lead. However, in the bottom of this inning, the Cubs’ Jeff Baker tied the game at 1-all with an RBI single off CC Sabathia.
Then in the bottom of the third inning, Alfonso Soriano took the Cubs into 4-1 lead with a dazzling three-run homer off Sabathia.
In the fourth inning, Nick Swisher and Eduardo Nunez each scored an RBI single to trim the lead to 4-3. Sabathia, on the other hand, restricted the Cubs to four-runs and the batters took full advantage of it. In the top of the sixth inning, Russell Martin
tied the game to four-all with a sacrifice fly off Randy Wells.
The Yankees took the game completely to their side in the eighth inning when Swisher blistered a 407-feet long three-run devastating homer against the Cubs’ reliever Chris Carpenter, who has replaced Sean Marshall just before this hit. The game went completely
to the Yankees side in the top of the ninth inning. Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez each scored an RBI single to take the lead into unassailable 10-4 position.
Despite allowing four runs on eight hits, walking one batter and making only three strike-outs, Sabathia won his ninth game of the season. With this win, Sabathia entered his name into the players, who have achieved nine-win mark in this season.
On the other hand, the Cubs’ pitcher consumed runs. Starter Wells allowed four runs on five hits, walked four and struck-out three batters over six innings. Reliever Marshall and Russell each gave two runs while Carpenter and closer Rodrigo Lopez each yielded
one run.
