New York Yankees humiliate Toronto Blue Jays 10-4 – MLB Update
New York Yankees improved their winning streak to three games as they humiliated the Toronto Blue Jays 10-4 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Friday, August 10 in the opening game of their three match series.
Manager Joe Girardi will be pleased to see his team building on some much needed confidence. With their win the Yankees put themselves five games ahead of second placed Baltimore Orioles on the American League East Division standings.
It will be great to see if the 2009 World Series Champions can continue their incredible form over the next few weeks to ensure a place in the playoffs.
Third baseman Jayson Nix took complete advantage of Blue Jays’ unforced errors, reaching first base safely on a throwing error by catcher Jeff Mathis as the Yankees took 1-0 lead in the second inning.
Veteran Ichiro Suzuki doubled Yankees lead to 2-0 with a groundout RBI to second.
"There's always an expectation here, whether it's fair or not, that when you get traded here you're supposed to really come and help," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said of Suzuki. "Some guys are going to feel that heat and I don't think it's really bothered
him."
"Sometimes I get up to the plate and they say, 'Playing left field, Ichiro Suzuki for the Yankees,'" he said through a translator. "It kind of takes me a while to remember, 'Oh yeah, I am on the Yankees.'"
Kelly Johnson helped Toronto stay in the game as with a home-run and a double in the fourth but New York was too determined to be defeated.
Mark Teixeira homered to right in the eighth. Nick Swisher, Raul Ibanez and Suzuki drove in crucial runs in the bottom of the ninth to end the game on an extremely destructive note.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Freddy Garcia pitched with great control and accuracy as he gave up just two runs in six solid innings for his sixth win of the year.
"I hate this ballpark," Garcia said. "I think baseball should be played on regular grass."
Blue Jays’ relief pitcher Steve Delabar paid the ultimate price for lack of concentration as he conceded four hits and three runs in just one inning of relief.
