New York Yankees humiliated by Detroit Tigers 1-8 – MLB Update
New York Yankees were humiliated by the Detroit Tigers 1-8 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday, October 18 in Game 4 of American League Championship Series.
Yankees’ offence looked defenceless against Tigers’ starting pitcher Max Scherzer. Curtis Granderson, Robinson Cano, Eric Chavez, Ichiro Suzuki also failed to make an impression as the Tigers secured a comfortable victory to advance to the World Series finals.
There were great expectations of ace C. C. Sabathia before the start of Game 4 but he was overpowered by Scherzer, who gave up just two hits and one run in five plus effective innings to play a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash.
Nick Swisher, who sat out Game 3 on Wednesday, drove in the only Yankees’ run with a double in the sixth inning. However, apart from him none of New York’s hitters could find scoring ways against Scherzer.
"It's certainly disappointing and hard to stomach how we played here recently, at the most important time of your year," General Manager Brian Cashman said in a post game interview. "We felt we let the fans down in New York and each other at the same time."
"You work a long time to get to this point, and to have it end abruptly, it is really, really difficult," manager Joe Girardi said. "We didn't swing the bats. It wasn't one guy, it wasn't two guys, it was a bunch of guys. And it's hard to win when you don't
score runs."
Girardi will be extremely disappointed with what he has seen from the Yankees’ hitters in the playoffs. Anibal Sanchez and Doug Fister dominated the Yankees in first two games to put Tigers in the driving seat.
Justin Verlander was too good for the Yankees in Game 3. Then, Scherzer continued the domination in Game 4. Allowing just six runs in their four American League Championship Series games, the Tigers’ starter have looked in fine form in the post-season and
it will be interesting to see if they continue the good work over the next week to claim the World Series title.
It will be interesting to see what type of changes the Yankees do during the offseason, as they will be looking to Spring Training to start a fresh season.
