New York Yankees ineffective without ace C.C. Sabathia – MLB Update
New York Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi will be an extremely worried man these days. Ace C.C. Sabathia has been placed on the disabled list due to a severe injury and veteran pitcher Andy Pettitte is also out of the bullpen after he picked up an ankle injury
in a game against the Cleveland Indians.
Without two of their best starting pitchers, the Yankees are finding it extremely tough to contain the hitters in the American League. In a game against the Chicago White Sox on Friday, June 29, they took a 7-14 hammering. Debutant Adam Warren had a forgettable
time on the mound. The starting pitcher was taken off after he gave up eight hits and six runs in just over two innings.
Relief pitcher David Phelps also looked short of answers as he struggled to control his fastballs and curveballs, allowing easy scoring opportunities to the White Sox offence. Phelps gave up four hits and two runs in just over three innings. Cory Wade gave
up six runs and seven hits in two plus innings, which ballooned his ERA to 5.79.
"I like Dewayne Wise a lot better when he's making catches to preserve perfect games than when he's on the mound," said Paul Konerko who drove in crucial runs for the White Sox.
"Of all the people on that team, I wish it had been A.J. that I faced. I would love to try to strike him out," said left-fielder Dewayne Wise who pitched for the Yankees. "It was fun. I always said that someday I hoped I would get the chance to go in and
pitch. I'm just glad I was able not to walk anybody."
With Michael Pineda also out for the entire season, it seems Phil Hughes and Hiroki Kuroda will have to step in to take the responsibility. It may not be easy for the inexperienced Hughes to win each decision but he has certainly shown an incredible ability
to handle pressure situations.
Girardi and General Manager Brian Cashman will be expecting the youngsters to justify their position before Pettitte and Sabathia are available for selection.
