New York Yankees lose 2-3 to Baltimore Orioles – MLB News
New York Yankees were beaten by the Baltimore Orioles 2-3 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Tuesday, May 21 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
With their win, the Orioles improved their record to 24-21. Manager, Buck Showalter, was very pleased with what he saw from his men in an important American League encounter. After taking an embarrassing home series loss against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Orioles were looking to put things back on track and that is exactly what they did on Tuesday evening to start their series against Yankees on a winning note.
On the other hand, Yankees were unable to continue their excellent winning streak. Despite putting up a brave fight, Joe Girardi and his men were unable to find their winning ways. It will be interesting to see if the Yankees can regroup and fight back in Game 2 to keep the series alive.
Yankees’ starting pitcher, Phil Hughes, had a decent time on the mound as he allowed just five hits and two runs in six solid innings. Striking out batters at regular intervals, he kept his side in the contest for most part of the game.
"We really needed this win," Dickerson said. "This team continues to grind, continues to push forward even when the chips are down. Nate came up huge. This was one of those things that can turn it around."
"It was nice to win, period," manager Buck Showalter said. "Anytime, regardless of yesterday and the day before. We don't get bogged down in that woe is me and this means that. You've got to keep turning the page."
"We've had him up a couple times and he's done some good things for us," Hafner said. "He helped them tonight."
Relief pitchers, Boone Logan, Shawn Kelley and David Robertson, made useful contributions, pitching three scoreless innings. Closer Vidal Nuno took his first loss of the year after he gave up the tie breaking single in the bottom of the ninth inning. Designated hitter Travis Hafner drove in valuable runs for the Yankees but unfortunately his efforts went in vain.
